Pathways to Success: Northern District of Georgia’s Civics Education Program
January 26, 2024 BGCMA

Thanks to the Northern District of Georgia’s Civics Education Committee, teens at our Michael A. Grant Club, A. W. Tony Matthews Club and James T. Anderson Club recently participated in a mock trial at the federal courthouse in downtown Atlanta!

The program brought together legal professionals, federal judges, and our Club’s teens for an enriching two-day experience.  On the first day, Club teens participated in interactive sessions with Judge Leigh May and Judge Steven Grimberg, who presented the facts of the mock trial. On day two, members participated in a mock trial the federal courthouse with Judge May presiding.

“Programs like this one are essential for breaking down barriers and promoting civics education – standout experiences that contribute to good character development and leadership,” said Chief Programs & Operations Officer Terri J. Fishback, of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta.

Our teens exhibited exceptional dedication and enthusiasm during the mock trial, with many diligently studying the provided handouts and case studies at home. Their engagement, authenticity, and overall experience played a pivotal role in making this collaboration an unequivocal success.

Notably, two of our Club-level executive directors shared that their teens returned to the Club after the first day brimming with excitement and newfound knowledge. Even days after the program concluded, members continued to enthusiastically share their experiences with their peers.

“Overall, the program was amazing!” said BGCMA Director of Workforce Readiness Jaleesa Jones. “A wise Club teen once said, ‘Keep that same energy,’ and I believe the team should do just that. Continue to bring your unique stories, experiences, & passion to this program. The panel discussion, Q&A, and small group breakouts were timed just right for teen engagement. Entry into the courthouse was smooth, and the members LOVED the tour. The diverse make-up of The Northern District of Georgia’s Civics Education Committee created a sense of belonging that reflects the richness of our society and prepares members for a future that values and celebrates differences.”

Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to everyone involved, from the legal professionals to our Club leadership, for contributing to the resounding success of this program. Together, we are continuing to inspire and empower the next generation.
