Meet Gabriel: Youth of the Year for East DeKalb Boys & Girls Club

Club membership: Joined in 2021

Post-Secondary/Career Interest: I plan to get a full-ride scholarship to Savannah State University and be a full-time photographer.

How has your Club supported your goals for college, post-secondary education, and career? They’ve expanded my mind to different opportunities than just one career. They gave me an example of their careers and showed me that life is more open-minded than just basketball or one career path.

Why is it important for the youth to use their voice in today’s society? Adults may not completely understand what comes from a teens/kids mind like mental issues, relationships, or trouble fitting in or trying to fit in with the wrong crowd.

Short Bio: Gabriel is a 16-year-old junior who credits the Club with helping him overcome the passing of his grandfather, uncle, and mother. As well as helping with his fear of making new friends, speaking up for himself, expressing himself, and learning how to be emotional in front of family and friends.
