Director Q & A
Q & A with the Executive Director – Ambernique Howard
Why the Boys & Girls Club?
Growing up a Club kid I attended BGCMA at the Harland Club. I remember transferring schools in the middle of year and being extremely disappointed that I had to leave the Club. Starting my career in youth development at the age of 16, I knew I had to make my way back to where I made my first best friend, took my first cooking class and had the best summer experiences ever! ,From personal experience to now being in the movement for 8 years, I could not have made a better decision.
Who influenced me?
In high school I was guided academically by my then mentor Mr. Charles Allen. Mr. Allen was the epitome of what it meant to carry yourself with excellence. He showed me what it meant to work hard and help those who need you most.
Advice for our youth?
Not everyone means you good but those who do, don’t take them for granted.
Our impact in the community?
East Dekalb’s impact is vast. Our partnership with Redan Parks & Recreation Center has brought opportunities for our members to experience softball, tennis, track and swimming. With plans of starting a community garden and refrigerator, our goal is to focus on the health and well-being of our members and community through service projects, markets and educational opportunities.
What makes our Club special?
Being in the movement for 8 years, I have had the opportunity to facilitate quality programming for 27+ clubs. What makes East Dekalb special is its sense of community and partnership. The member and staff relationships are like any I have ever seen. The staff know the parents by first name and the Redan staff are welcoming and willing to help with no questions. I love the family feel, warm hugs and big smiles I receive every day.
