Spelman College English 390 Volunteer Day at Harland Club
May 5, 2023 BGCMA

Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta (BGCMA)’s Marketing & Communications Department had a few extra hands this spring–thanks to Spelman College!

A part-time instructor at Spelman College, BGCMA Vice President of Marketing & Communications Sherna “Dr. Nae” Phillips, PhD taught English 390: Writing & Editing for Digital Media during the spring 2023 term. Structuring the course as an apprenticeship allowed her students to devote their course work to serving the mission & vision of BGCMA while gaining real-world non-profit communications experience.

Throughout the semester, English 390 students developed tools and tips to build a healthier relationship with technology, gained understanding of the role of the mission and vision of nonprofits (specifically at BGCMA), learned brand guidelines (including AP Style), trained in writing & editing digital platforms (including Canva and WordPress), created real-world digital marketing collateral items for BGCMA (including our new Impact Reports), and executed a digital marketing & communications plans for BGCMA departments (including Camp Kiwanis and Champions Club for GIRLS).

Students expressed appreciation for BGCMA’s mission to ignite the unlimited potential of kids & teens–especially after seeing our mission work in action at our Rebel Women Luncheon, TopGolf Fundraiser: Driving Great Futures, and a Spelman College volunteer day at our John H. Harland Boys & Girls Club (located within walking distance from their campus).

Here are a few stories inspired by their Harland Club volunteer experience:
