Among the many offerings at the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Atlanta, from college readiness to team sports and service, the Harland Club’s special and hidden gem is in arts programming.
The yearly Harland-Chella, a playful spin on “Coachella,” features the performing arts, dancing, step-shows and handmade paintings by the Club members. The main goal is to encourage students to be themselves and feel confident in their creativity.
A top priority for BGCMA counselors is encouragement. While working with young children in their elementary school years, returning counselor and BGCMA alumna Karissa Jackson, uplifts her students with the motto that “everything looks good…because you did it.”
The BGCMA has been a home for Jackson since she was nine years old. A scholarship recipient of BGCMA and Clark Atlanta University senior, her involvement demonstrates her appreciation of the Club’s values. Jackson often hosts art classes with first and second graders. Seven-year-old Kartez H. was excited to work on an oil illustration while showing off his latest drawing.
Another educator and motivator in the Harland Club is Vincent Blake, a freelance creative director and Savannah College of Art and Design alumnus who has worked with the likes of Jordan Peele. One of Harland Club’s prized works, created by Blake and the members, is a colorful mural that shines by the reception desk.
“I didn’t know how it was going to work out,” Blake said. “I just trust the process with the kids, and they did their thing!”
Blake teaches his students “trial and error” by embarking on new projects they try as a team. This skill set is valuable, showing that perseverance and consistency can lead to fruitful outcomes.
