Under the guidance of  Whitehead Club Music Studio and Production Instructor Richard Johnson and BGCMA Director of Arts & Innovation Ruben Royster, this initiative became a highlight of the 2023-2024 program year.

“Originally conceived as a tribute to the holiday season, the project quickly grew into a broader celebration of artistic expression. Fifty members were given full creative freedom to explore and produce a wide range of music. This was not limited to traditional holiday tunes; they composed instrumental pieces and full tracks with lyrics, each capturing their thoughts, emotions, and unique perspectives,” Royster said.

The music Whitehead Club members created is more than just sound. It’s a reflection of their growing talents and the supportive environment at Boys & Girls Clubs.  At BGCMA, creativity and expression are not only encouraged but celebrated, allowing youth to develop their skills and share their voices with confidence.

“This music project stands as a testament to the vibrant community we nurture at Joseph B. Whitehead Boys & Girls Club and across our footprint in 10 Metro Atlanta counties, showcasing the incredible potential of our members and the power of music to bring us all together,” Royster said.

The following song “Butterfly,” written and performed by Dana H., Ava L. and Zoe W., took first place honors in the BGCA National Arts Contest in the 6–9-year-old division of digital arts.

In the spirit of shared passion and dedication, Dana, Zoe, and Ava embarked on a journey of musical exploration, channeling their individual stories into a harmonious blend of melody and verse. “Butterfly” is a radiant ode to beauty, growth, and freedom, symbolized by the graceful flutter of a butterfly’s wings. Their decision to craft this song was fueled by a desire to inspire others to embrace imagination, cultivate personal growth, and soar to new heights, much like the graceful butterfly.
