Have you ever looked up at the stars and realized your calling in life?
That’s exactly what happened to Sir Dalvin Holloman. It was a Wednesday night at Camp Kiwanis in Danielsville, Georgia. Sir Dalvin set out for a hike with his Boys & Girls Club buddies to explore the 160-acre grounds. What he found would change his life.
“I had never seen a sky full of stars like that. It inspires you to push forward.”
And that’s just what Sir Dalvin did. It was his first time away at camp, but it wouldn’t be his last. He went on to spend several summers mentoring his younger peers as a camp counselor.
“Camp Kiwanis opened my eyes to this world of opportunity…before Boys & Girls Club I never knew that a career in outdoor recreation was a possibility,” said Sir Dalvin.
“My goal is to get kids outdoors, foster their knowledge in an environment where they’re not used to, and inspire them to gain a new level of respect for nature.”
The boy whose mentors describe as “bubbly”, “excited”, and “thirsty for knowledge” has grown into a young man who is realizing his dreams faster than he could have imagined.
Not only is Sir Dalvin a rising sophomore at Georgia College and State University and studying for his dream job as an outdoor recreation major, but the former BGCMA Youth of the Year is now co-leading backpacking expeditions throughout the mighty Grand Canyon!
At Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta, we have a huge responsibility. While Georgia has seen improvement in youth obesity rates in the past few years, we still report the 3rd highest prevalence of overweight children in the country. Our Clubs and you have the power to change that.
We want our kids and teens to understand the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle and realize they can have fun doing it. Sir Dalvin is a shining example of how far a child can go given the right resources and opportunities.
