Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta celebrated Hispanic & Latino Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 – coinciding with the Independence Day celebrations of Belize, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Nicaragua.
About 7% of our Boys & Girls Club members identify as Latino or Hispanic, representing over 200 kids and teens. As we create safe, inclusive, and engaging environments, it is always important to acknowledge, teach, and celebrate the diversity around us. Take a look at some of our Clubs’ celebrations!
Malon D. Mimms Club
Our Mimms Club celebrated Hispanic & Latino Heritage Month with a tasting from different Latin American and Caribbean countries. Featured countries included México, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Venezuela, and Cuba. Our Club kids tried foods like tamales, horchata, tres leches cupcakes, and more. At the Venezuela table, the kids watched how to make cheese arepas.
Lawrenceville Club
The Lawrenceville Club celebrated Hispanic & Latino Heritage Month with an Empanada Day! They paired their cheese empanadas with horchata. Our Club staff led a discussion on the history of both empanadas and horchata.
Whitehead Boys & Girls Club
Our Club members at Whitehead spent a week learning about Latin dance, traditional foods, and instruments! They even made their own piñatas out of paper mâché and more.
Chamblee Boys & Girls Club
Our Chamblee Club celebrated with decorations and lessons on the traditions of different Hispanic and Latin cultures.
