Celebrating Rebel Women in Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta

Celebrating Rebel Women in Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta
March 16, 2023 BGCMA

It is Women’s History Month, and we are celebrating “rebel women” behind and beyond the Blue Doors of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta (BGCMA) all monthlong!

You may be familiar with the popular children’s book Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls. “Rebel girls” question ideas that are unfair, choose to be themselves even when it’s not popular, and create a better world for others. As an organization where women constitute 65% of our workforce and girls constitute 48% of our Club membership, we see “rebel women” igniting the unlimited potential of “rebel girls” at our 25 Clubs across Metro Atlanta each day.

Our dedicated staff mentors and girl empowerment programs help guide our girls through their journey into womanhood. At BGCMA, we’re also fortunate to have the support of volunteer leaders and community partners who understand the value of investing in our girls. Our more recent programs include:

  • Griot Girls Club: a storytelling workshop where teen girls hone their voices through the written and spoken word.
  • Girl Empowering Movement (GEM): a youth-led statewide initiative to increase physical activity among middle school girls (for example Keep It Moving yoga and the Jump Rope Challenge)
  • My Hair My Crown with DOVE:  a body positivity program focused on embracing all textures and styles of hair.

In addition, our Champions Club for GIRLS women’s giving society is comprised of passionate women volunteers who empower each other and pour into our Clubs through signature fundraising events like the annual Rebel Women Luncheon, which will be held this year on March 24 at our Harland Club. CNN Health Reporter Jacqueline Howard will host, and BGCMA Trustee Stephanie Blank will moderate a panel discussion centered around “Movin’ On Up: Smashing the Glass Ceiling” on the pathway to success.

This month and all year long, let’s continue to honor the “rebel women” who inspire and empower our “rebel girls” to thrive in life and strengthen the futures of their communities and the world.
