LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – On Friday, March 8, 2024, Lawrenceville Boys & Girls Club commemorated a remarkable milestone, honoring Executive Director Rory Johnson for his transformative leadership over the past 25 years. The event, held on the exact anniversary of Johnson’s tenure with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta (BGCMA), was a heartfelt tribute to his enduring impact.
“Rory Johnson’s impact on our organization and the lives of young people in Lawrenceville cannot be overstated,” said David Jernigan, President & CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta. “For 25 years, he has been a steadfast advocate for our mission, fostering a nurturing environment where every child can thrive. This anniversary celebration is a testament to his remarkable leadership and unwavering dedication.”
The celebration was attended by a host of esteemed guests, including Rory’s beloved wife of over 36 years, Gwen Johnson, their two sons, grandchildren, and a host of family and friends. Club alums, former and current staff, and distinguished community figures, such as Lawrenceville Mayor David Still, also gathered to pay homage to Johnson’s remarkable legacy.
Mayor Still took the stage to share poignant reflections on Johnson’s impact, highlighting the profound difference he has made in the lives of Lawrenceville families. Mayor Still also read a heartfelt letter of support, underscoring Johnson’s immeasurable value to the community.
Attendees were incredibly moved by touching testimonials from Club members and alums, emphasizing the personal and lasting influence of Johnson’s mentorship and support.
“His passion for community engagement and youth development resonates within me and has become my aspiration to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others,” said Club Alumna Karissa Jackson. “Today, I stand before you as a proud graduate of the Lawrenceville Boys & Girls Club, grateful for Mr. J’s guidance and vision. In honor of Mr. J’s 25th anniversary, let’s all be inspired to take action and invest in our youth through volunteering, mentorship, or philanthropy. Each of us has the power to make a difference in the lives of others. Together, we can continue Mr. J’s legacy of empowerment and create brighter futures for all. Thank you, Mr. J, for being an exemplary leader to all of us.”
“The leadership skills that Mr. Johnson helped me develop, I put towards JROTC and the Police Explorers program, which have helped me become a successful leader,” said Angel, a current Club member. “Not only that, Mr. Johnson has helped me, my brother, and our family during tough times. It’s been 10 years since my father has been gone, and Mr. Johnson has played like a father figure for my family. I appreciate everything that he’s done.”
In his closing remarks, Johnson expressed heartfelt gratitude to all who have supported him throughout his journey, including his family, colleagues, and the Lawrenceville community. He reflected on the meaningful connections forged over the past 25 years and reiterated his unwavering commitment to the youth of Lawrenceville since joining BGCMA on March 8, 1999: “I knew my calling. This is not a job; this is M.I.N.I.S.T.R.Y. Ministry is not ignoring situations that require youth.”
