In June, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta (BGCMA) proudly celebrated Pride Month with the theme YOU BELONG. This theme resonated deeply with our ongoing mission to create safe, inclusive, and engaging environments where youth can thrive and reach their full potential. At BGCMA, we have long understood the importance of fostering a sense of belonging. This commitment extends to our entire community—youth, families, and staff alike. The following interview with A. Worley Brown Club Executive Director Lawrence Mims underscores the importance of inclusion within our Movement.

What does the theme “You Belong” mean to you personally?
To me, ‘You Belong’ means that no matter who you are or where you come from, you belong here. It stands out as a message of universal acceptance and community.
In what ways have you felt accepted, and where do you think additional support is needed?
I’ve always felt accepted at BGCMA. My sexuality has never hindered my growth within the organization. I started as a volunteer and eventually became the executive director. One area for additional support is understanding pronouns. While the organization has made strides, there’s still room for improvement in making the process simpler and more accessible for everyone.
Can you share any experiences at your Club that made you feel included or supported?
The kids and parents at our Club have shown incredible support. During past Pride Months, they’ve given me drawings, small gifts, and even flags to display in my office. These gestures mean a lot and make me feel truly appreciated.
How can BGCMA better support staff and the youth we serve?
We need to continuously be open to learning about the LGBTQI community. This involves understanding and embracing the experiences of our members and staff.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about the importance of celebrating Pride Month?
Celebrating Pride Month is about starting and ending everything with love. Regardless of sexuality, religion, ethnicity, or any other characteristic, if we approach each other with genuine love and kindness, we’ll be okay. Understanding and kindness are key to fostering a truly inclusive environment.
