21st Century Community Learning Center Grant to provide free Club membership, additional staff support, and academic enrichment to youth
NEWNAN, GA – November 22, 2019 – The Howard-Warner Boys & Girls Club has received a major grant that will provide additional staff and free membership to 60 additional Club members who will have access to academic enrichment opportunities made possible through the 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant.
The 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant will award $250,000 a year for the next five years to the Howard-Warner Club in Newnan, Ga. In addition to providing free Club membership and three youth development professionals, the funding will also bring six educators to the Club as part of its partnership with Welch Elementary School in Newnan.
According to the U.S. Department of Education, the 21st Century grant is designed to help students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math. Through this grant, participating Club members will also benefit from various academic enrichment activities and educational services.
“Many of the families we serve do not have extra money to invest in tutoring and other resources for their children, so this grant really means a lot,” said Lauren Odom, senior executive director of the Howard-Warner Club. “We want to make sure our kids are well prepared with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the classroom today and the workforce tomorrow.”
Last year, 98% of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta high school seniors graduated high school and were placed in a post-secondary opportunity such as college, technical school, and the military. Odom said the 21st Century grant will help keep Club members on the right track.
“On behalf of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta, I want to thank the Coweta County Schools Board for partnering with us in this effort to secure the 21st Century grant,” said Odom. “It will go a long way toward helping our kids achieve the great futures they aspire to attain one day.”
